SpeakPapa — Help & Support

We're a tiny family team, and a real person reads every message. Most questions are answered below; if yours isn't, email [email protected] and we'll get back to you within 2 business days.

New here? Start in three taps

  • Open the app and tap the big blue Start Voice Practice button.
  • The coach says a word in calm Hindi. Your family member repeats it in their own time — recording happens automatically, with nothing to press.
  • They hear their own voice played back, then the next item arrives on its own. That's a whole session.

The K / क sound pack is free forever — the complete, guided experience, not a trial. You only ever upgrade when you've seen it help.

Designed so he can practise on his own

The most common worry we hear is "he's not good with phones." That's exactly who SpeakPapa is built for. After the one big button, there is nothing else to operate — the app speaks, listens, and moves on by itself. Tapping anywhere just pauses; there is no wrong button to press. A caregiver sets things up once; daily practice needs only that single tap.

Getting the most from each day

  • A little, often. Ten quiet minutes a day helps more than an hour once a week. Pick a calm time and keep it consistent.
  • Let silences be. If he's tired and goes quiet, the app waits and rests with him. Missed days are normal — just begin again tomorrow.
  • Listen back together. Playing today next to a recording from weeks ago is where families hear the progress.
  • Start where it's easy. Begin with the free K pack; add more sounds when he's ready for variety.

Using the app

How do I change what's practised? Settings → Voice Practice → Change. Pick a sound (or several, or all), the practice type, how many items, and how many repeats. You'll hear a preview of the exact items before saving.

Why are the items different each time? By default the app picks fresh items for each session so practice stays interesting. To repeat one exact list every time, choose "Same items every time" when saving a practice.

My mother had the stroke, not my father — is it still for her? Completely. "Papa" is our family's story, not a requirement. You can set any name (or none) in Settings → Audio, and everything else is identical.

Can more than one family member use it? The app practises one saved setup at a time on a device. You can switch sounds or settings anytime in Settings; recordings and history are kept on that device.

Does it work without internet / while travelling? Yes. Core practice works fully offline. The app only goes online to handle purchases and to download occasional app updates.

Does it work on iPad? Yes, on iPhone and iPad.

Sound & voice

The coach speaks too fast. Settings → Audio → Coach speaking speed → Slower (this is the default).

Can the coach use his name? Settings → Audio → "Coach calls him (optional)." Type a name and tap Hear sample. Leave it empty for no name.

No sound? Check the device isn't on silent, raise the volume, then try Settings → Audio → Play a test sound.

It didn't seem to record / I can't hear the playback. Make sure microphone access is allowed for SpeakPapa in your device Settings → Privacy → Microphone. Recording is automatic during the green "your turn" step; playback follows on its own.

Progress

How do I know it's working? Tap Progress on the home screen. SpeakPapa keeps a private timeline of practised items and recordings, so you can play an earlier attempt beside a recent one and hear the change over weeks and months. There are no scores or grades — progress here is heard, not marked.

Recordings & privacy

Where do the recordings go? They stay on your device only. There are no accounts and no cloud, and nothing is uploaded. See our Privacy Policy: /privacy.html.

How do I delete everything? Delete the app — all recordings, history, and settings are removed permanently. Some items can also be cleared from within the app where those options appear.

Is it safe for an older adult recovering from a stroke? It's gentle by design, but please stop for pain, major fatigue, dizziness, coughing, choking, shortness of breath, or distress, and follow your clinician's guidance. SpeakPapa supports home practice between professional care — it is not medical advice and does not replace a doctor or speech-language pathologist.

Subscription & billing

What's free? The K / क sound pack is free forever, including the full guided practice experience.

What does Full Access include? All 32 sounds and every practice type — thousands of everyday words, phrases, and sentences. Current pricing is $9.99/month or $49.99/year (about $4 a month); plans and prices may change, and the price shown in the App Store at purchase or renewal is the one that applies. Cancel anytime.

How do I cancel? Device Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → SpeakPapa. Cancelling keeps access until the end of the paid period; the free K pack stays free either way.

I already paid — how do I restore my subscription (new phone, reinstall)? Open the upgrade screen in the app and tap Restore purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with.

Can my family share one subscription? If Family Sharing is enabled for your Apple Account, Full Access can be shared with your family group at no extra cost — set this up in your device Settings → [your name] → Family Sharing.

What happens if my subscription lapses? Any practice you've already saved keeps working, and the free K pack remains free; you'd only need Full Access again to switch to a locked sound.

Refunds. Subscriptions are billed and refunded by Apple. Refund requests go through reportaproblem.apple.com.

Policies & pricing

Can the Terms, Privacy Policy, or pricing change? Yes. We may update them at any time, without prior notice, and the current versions are always posted here: Terms — /terms.html, Privacy — /privacy.html. Because the app has no accounts and we keep no contact details, we don't send individual update emails — please check those pages; the version posted there is the one that applies.

Why we built this

SpeakPapa was built by a son for his father after a stroke — a calm, daily coach for the practice that recovery needs between therapy sessions. We hope it helps someone you love find their words again.
