SpeakPapa was built by a son for his 80-year-old father after a stroke. If you're setting it up for your mum or dad, here's how the app tries to meet them exactly where they are.

Eyesight, a weaker hand, tiredness, a bit of confusion — a stroke touches different things for everyone. Each of these lets them keep practising anyway. (We say "Papa" because that's our family's story — it's just as much for your mum.)

They don't need to see the screen clearly. With VoiceOver, the app reads each word and button aloud — so they can practise entirely by ear.

If one hand is weak or shaky

A stroke often leaves one side weaker. If tapping is hard, Voice Control lets them use just their voice — "Tap Start Voice Practice" — instead of fighting the screen.

If reading small print is a strain

Turn on Larger Text and every word grows to a size they can read from their chair — no hunting for glasses. The type and buttons are already big to begin with.

Whether the room is bright or dim

Deep blue and dark ink on cream — a high-contrast palette that stays clear in a sunny kitchen or a dim bedroom, and is gentle on tired, older eyes.

So they're never unsure whose turn it is

"Is it my turn now?" The screen always answers in plain words, not just a colour they might miss — so the coach's turn, their turn, and the playback are never confusing. (This is what Differentiate Without Colour Alone means.)

So you don't have to sit with them every time

"He's not good with phones" is the worry we hear most — and it's exactly who this is for. You set it up once; after that, a single tap is the whole skill they need.

One tap, then nothingThey press one big button. The app speaks, records on its own, and moves on — there's no wrong button to press.
It waits for themThe coach speaks slowly and sits patiently through long pauses. No timers, no rushing, no pressure to keep up.
